Where does that ugly 169.254.xxx.xxx IP come from?

APIPA aka 169.254.xxx.xxx what? Where does that ugly 169.254.xxx.xxx IP come from?

You booted-up today, and all of a sudden you have a brand new IP address coming out of nowhere? Like 169.254.xxx.xxx something?

Some spyware? A virus?

Luckily not, you probably have some issues with your DHCP.

The 169.254.xxx.xxx range of IP addresses is reserved by Microsoft for private network addressing: if you automatically obtain an IP via DHCP, today Windows automatically assigned this address to you because it couldn't find a DHCP server.

APIPA at msdn
