Deauville, in the Basse-Normandie region of France, is regarded as the "Queen of the Norman beaches", thanks to its racecourse, harbour, international film festival, marinas, conference centre, villas, Grand Casino and sumptuous hotels.
The town of Deauville has been a fashionable holiday resort for the international upper class since the 19th-century (the marker on this map shows the plane's position).
F. Scott Fitzgerald mentions Deauville in "The Great Gatsby", Fleming's Casino Royale was probably inspired by this location, and Deauville was a popular vacation spot for Coco Chanel.
