Brain processes memories six to seven times faster than real time |
As discovered by scientists rats, when sleeping, play back memories as much as seven times faster than the events really happened. The research was conducted at the University of Arizona.
Memory stores patterns in modular form in the brain’s cortex, while the hippocampus creates and assigns a tag, a kind of temporary bar code, unique to every memory.
A memory of having lunch, for example, would involve a number of modules: where the diner sat, what was served, etc. Scientists discovered that replaying the memory of a lunch that might have taken up an hour of actual time, only takes 8 to 10 minutes.
That happens because the speed of the recalling process isn't constrained by the real world physical laws regulating activity in time and space, and takes place at the maximum speed possible.
