The oldest living tree

The planet's longest-lived identified plant

The oldest living tree. The planet's longest-lived identified plant

Researchers have discovered in Sweden the world's oldest known living tree. It is a conifer that first took root at the end of the last Ice Age.

What we can see in the picture is not that old, but its root system has been growing for the last 9,550 years.

It was discovered in 2004, and it is very similar to the species traditionally used to decorate European homes during Christmas.

Apparently the tree's incredible longevity is due to its ability to clone itself.

The researchers also identified other trees in Sweden that were between 5,000 and 6,000 years old.
