My God, it's full of galaxies! |

This amazing image is a picture of the Perseus Cluster, one of the closest clusters of galaxies. Yes, galaxies, not stars. The astronaut David Bowman in 2001: A Space Odyssey should have said - My God, it's full of galaxies! - then, instead of the famous quote: - My God, it's full of stars! :-)
Each of the objects in the photo is a galaxy like our Milky Way, each with billions of stars like our sun (and much bigger). The Perseus Cluster of Galaxies contains over 1,000 galaxies. This picture covers about 7.5 million light-years, and has been the Astronomy Picture of the Day for May 20th, 2008. See it here at its best.
