We are more than our genomes

A modern version of the ancient predestination principle

We are more than our genomes. A modern version of the ancient predestination principle

The world as we know it is going to change soon. Everything. From how you interact with your doctor, to how you get a job, to how you look at yourself in life.

Within the next few years the $1,000 genome will be achievable. An our life will become Gattaca - or something closely resembling it.

Gattaca, the 1997 movie where everybody's entire genome sequence is placed into a national database since when you're born. The database is accessible to all corporate and governmental bodies.

Your genome in the Gattaca world determines all your rights and privileges.

The magic number of $1,000 has been suggested as the amount that insurance companies will happily pay for their clients to get their genome sequenced.

If this becomes reality then medicine, the law, how you get a job, how you get a date, everything may change.

And listen to "Science News" by JJ Campanella
from 28:10 to 45:20

We are more than our genomes. Our DNA does not define us. We define ourselves. Those people who tell you that your abilities and destiny are already determined by your DNA on the day when you were born have no idea what they are talking about. This is just a modern version of the ancient predestination principle.
