Are we defaulting to God?
What's more complex, a cucumber or a Boeing 747? |
• Default to God. Do we have a predisposition to believe in a super-natural world? Is religion an evolutionary adaptation? Religious ideas are common to all cultures: human beings have a natural inclination for religious belief, especially during hard times. Our brains effortlessly conjure up an imaginary world of spirits, gods and monsters, and the more insecure we feel, the harder it is to resist the pull of this supernatural world :

• What's more complex, a cucumber or a Boeing 747? A lily plant or ancient lungfish both have 40 times the DNA base pairs than humans. Are they more complex? What's more complex: Windows Vista with 50 million lines of code, a modern turbo jet with over 22,000 parts, or the Space Shuttle with tens of millions of physical parts? Yet most of Space Shuttle's complexity is in its software. Our refrigerators, cars, even doors and windows are more complex than two decades ago. How complex can they get? Is there a limit? :
