The Japanese Melody Roads

If you drive slowly and carefully they play a tune for you

The Japanese Melody Roads. If you drive slowly and carefully they play a tune for you

In Japan a team from the Hokkaido Industrial Research Institute has built a number of "melody roads".

The experimental roads play distinctive songs through your car, but only when you drive slowly and carefully down them.

The melody road uses grooves, cut at very specific intervals in the road surface, and the spaces between to create different notes.

At the moment there are three musical strips in central and northern Japan - one of which plays the tune of a Japanese pop song.

Besides the music, timed traffic lights reward you with a "green wave" if you stick to the limit.
